Audiovisualogie: Bild-Ton Relationen in Kunst, Technik, Wissenschaft und Unterhaltung

Since the Age of Enlightenment (Louis-Bertrand Castel's Piano Eyes and Friedrich Chladni's Sound Figures) a relation has existed between visual and acoustic phenomena and a paradigm of hybridisation between art, technology, science and entertainment. In the second half of the 19th Century, scientists and inventors including Hermann von Helmholtz (Physiology of Hearing and Vision) and Thomas Alva Edison (Phonograph and Kinetograph) devoted themselves to such questions. In the 1920s, a socio-technical network was developed in Germany of image-sound relations in which heterogeneous subject areas overlap (absolute film, radio phones sound radio play, sound-film technology, electrical engineering, anthropology and synaesthesia).

The digitisation of Audiovisuality has taken place through a hybridisation of media formats, artistic genres and cultural contexts rather than solely technological. The idea behind the lecture is that this  development has already been in process for 250 years.
