Vom 01.bis zum 06.Februar ist das Haus der Kulturen (HKW) erneut Schauplatz der transmediale.

Mit dem Titel RESPONSE:ABILITY ruft die transmediale.11 zur gemeinsamen Reflexion darüber auf, wie wir heute mit und im Internet leben. Das Netz als gesellschaftliche Handlungszone wird immer mehr zu einer umkämpften Ressource. Gleichzeitig führt der Aufstieg von sozialen Netzwerken, die neue Qualität mobiler Kommunikationstechnologien und Echtzeitmedien zu einer zunehmenden Liveschaltung und Vernetzung unserer Gesellschaft. Die transmediale.11 hinterfragt welche Handlungsmöglichkeiten nach der Ära Web 2.o für Internetnutzer bestehen, um auf diese Entwicklungen zu reagieren. Rund 170 Künstler, Wissenschaftler und Medienaktivisten gestalten vor diesem Hintergrund im Haus der Kulturen der Welt und an 20 weiteren Satellitenorten eine interdisziplinäre Plattform mit Kunstwerken, Vorträgen, Performances, Workshops und Screenings.

Thematische Schwerpunkte und Highlights aus über 150 Events und Projekten der transmediale.11 sind unter anderem:

The Open Zone ist eine gesellschaftliche Versuchsanordnung rund um Freie Kultur und das Offene Web. Dafür werden verschiedene soziale Territorien während der gesamten transmediale.11 von Künstlern, Wissenschaftlern und Medienaktivisten besiedelt. In offenen Ateliers, Projektbüros, Tauschzentren und Experimentierräumen im Foyer des Haus der Kulturen der Welt entsteht eine Modellstadt, in der die strategischen Voraussetzungen einer offenen Internet-Kultur untersucht und für die Besucher erfahrbar gemacht werden.
Mit Ursula Endlicher, Kelly Sutton, Heath Bunting, Christopher 'moot' Poole, Mushon Zer-Aviv, Elizabeth Stark, Peter Sunde, Les Liens Invisibles, Berlin's Open Design City und vielen anderen. Eine permanente Präsenz wird zudem Angel-F haben, eine Spyware die während der technologisch-sensuellen Beziehung zwischen Biodoll und Derrick de Kerckhove entstand.

Unter dem Titel BODY:RESPONSE – Biomediale Politik im Zeitalter der digitalen Liveness untersucht die Konferenz der transmediale.11 die bio- und psychopolitischen Machtwirkungen im Webzeitalter. Die zunehmende Biologisierung der Medien sowie die Hybridisierung virtueller und realer Räume schafft neue affektive und emotionale Handlungszonen zwischen Technologie und Körper.

Das Film- und Videoprogramm SyncExistence zeigt in elf kuratierten Film- und Videoprogrammen 58 zeitgenössische und historische Werke, die verdeutlichen, wie das Kino durch die Montagetechnik das im  20. Jahrhundert charakteristische Gefühl von Gleichzeitigkeit, Allgegenwärtigkeit und Beschleunigung befördert hat, welches heute mit dem Internet seine Potenzierung erfährt.

2] Kulturstiftung des Bundes verlängert Förderung

Die Kulturstiftung des Bundes fördert die transmediale, Festival für Kunst und digitale Kultur seit dem Jahr 2005 als sogenannten Kulturellen Leuchtturm im Rahmen der Förderung fortlaufender Veranstaltungsreihen. Diese Förderung wird bis 2017 mit einem jährlichen Betrag von bis zu 450.000 Euro verlängert.

Die transmediale genießt einen weit über Deutschland hinausgehenden exzellenten Ruf. In Europa gilt sie als einzigartig, insofern sie die Präsentation hervorragender künstlerischer Werke mit einer breiten Debatte über die kulturellen und politischen Implikationen digitaler Kommunikation verbindet. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass digitale Medien heute einen großen Verbreitungsgrad haben, lässt die transmediale die Nische einer technologisch fixierten Medienkunst hinter sich und diskutiert Themen wie digitales Copyright, kollektive Autorschaft oder Meinungsbildung in einer globalisierten Medien-gesellschaft. Ein zentrales Thema stellt bis heute das Internet dar – verbunden mit der Frage, inwiefern digitale Netzwerke neue Formen sozialer und politischer Teilhabe ermöglichen.

4] Marshall McLuhan 'COUNTERBLAST 1954' tm Sonderedition!

Am 31. Dezember 2010 wäre Marshall McLuhan 100 Jahre alt geworden. Zu diesem Anlass präsentiert die transmediale die radikalste und bisher kaum erforschte Arbeit des kanadischen Philosophen: COUNTERBLAST. Die Publikation existiert in zwei Versionen: die ausführliche Ausgabe wurde 1969 in Zusammenarbeit mit Harley Parker produziert. In 1954 verteilte McLuhan die erste Fassung als Manifesto in Form eines handgemachten 'zines'. Anlässlich der "McLuhan in Europe 2011" Netzwerk-Initiative, mit freundlicher Erlaubnis von The Estate of Corinne McLuhan und in Zusammenarbeit mit Gingko Press (Hamburg), wird die transmediale eine originalgetreue Kopie der bisher unveröffentlichten Counterblast - Ausgabe von 1954 als Hardcover produzieren. Die Auflage ist auf 300 Stück limitiert. Diese Sonderedition, mit einer Einleitung des McLuhan Biographen W. Terrence Gorodon sowie einem Schlusswort der Literaturwissenschaftlerin Elena Lamberti, wird ausschließlich über die transmediale erhältlich sein!

In the first week of February, Berlin's House of World Cultures (HKW) will play host to transmediale.11 RESPONSE:ABILITY!

Presenting a dynamic programme of cutting edge artworks, breathtaking live performances and leading thinkers from around the world transmediale.11 addresses the ways in which our digital culture is radically redefining our physical presence and the ways in which we interact as interdependent global communities. By looking at the emergent forms of bio-political, economic and affective dimensions of a society increasingly manifesting itself live and online transmediale.11 reaches beyond the Web 2.0 era, examining the Internet in terms of the abilities and potentials available to its users, not only to participate but to actively shape it as contemporary society's central zone of inquiry, creative and cultural development - while pushing the need to defend it from restrictive political and legal intervention. Particularly now, as we become faced with the mounting post-WikiLeak scenarios of irrational net restrictions and the threats of self-censorship, asserting that the 'problem' is not the net, but (in this case) the notoriously irresponsible handling of data and personal communications by governments and numerous proprietary interests becomes more urgent than ever.

SyncExistence features eleven film and video programmes curated by Marcel Schwierin comprising 58 historical and contemporary moving image works from 18 countries. This year's main focus is a reflection on the vital ways in which 20th century cinema – through its editing techniques and new visual culture – contributed to promoting the sense of growing simultaneity, ubiquity and acceleration which the Internet has since increased exponentially. Additional highlights include a focus on the first live television broadcasts, specials on Lynn Hershman Leeson, a leading pioneer of interactive live media art, Ho Tzu Nyen, the transmediale Award Nominee from Singapore, and the second edition of the ArabShorts project.

2] German Federal Cultural Foundation extends transmediale funding til 2017!

Since 2005, transmediale Festival for Art and Digital Culture, has  been funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation as a /Kulturelle  Leuchtturmprojekte/ (trans-cultural beacon), recognised as an outstanding and leading event within the German cultural landscape. It was recently announced  that transmediale's funding has been extended until 2017 with an annual  sum of 450.000 EUR. Throughout Germany and beyond, transmediale is renowned as unique in its endeavour to embed outstanding artistic works in a discursive frame on the cultural and political implications of our digitally influenced society. In view of the broad diffusion rate of digital  media today, transmediale fills the niche of presenting  technologically-based media art while discussing issues including digital copyright, collective authorship or opinion-making in a globalised network society. The Internet, as our primary realm of communications mobility, and the question in how far digital networks enable new forms of social and political participation is central to the discourse at transmediale.

4] Marshall McLuhan 'COUNTERBLAST 1954' transmediale special edition!

Kicking off the Marshall McLuhan Centennial transmediale presents one of the Canadian  media philosopher's most radical yet relatively under-explored works,  COUNTERBLAST. Two very different versions of this text exist, the full  1969 edition produced in collaboration with Harley Parker, and the  biting never-before published manifesto McLuhan distributed as a  hand-made 'zine' in 1954. On the occasion of the 'McLuhan in Europe  2011' network initiative, with the kind permission of The Estate of  Corinne McLuhan and in collaboration with the Gingko Press (Hamburg)  transmediale will publish a special hardcover 'limited edition' facsimile of the original 1954 'COUNTERBLAST'. Featuring an introduction by McLuhan biographer W. Terrence Gordon and an afterword by literary scholar Elena Lamberti this exclusive edition will be available only via transmediale!
