Liebe transmediale Freunde,
als künstlerischer Leiter des transmediale-Festivals möchte ich Sie zum ersten Newsletter begrüßen, der Sie ab sofort monatlich über die Entwicklung und das Programm der transmediale.11 informieren wird. Zunächst möchte ich mich aber nochmals bei allen Künstlern und Gästen bedanken, die an der transmediale.10 teilgenommen haben und unser Team freut sich, Sie auch im kommenden Jahr wieder begrüßen zu dürfen. Die Resonanz, die wir mit dem diesjährigen Festival FUTURITY NOW! erlebt haben, war überwältigend und viele der von uns präsentierten Projekte entwickeln sich weiter über das Festival hinaus, hier in Berlin und international. So wird es in Berlin über das ganze Jahr eine Reihe von Free Culture Incubator Workshops geben, eine Long Conversation im Juli in Bandung, Indonesien sowie eine Ausstellung in Beijing im August, die von unseren Partnern Art Claims Impulse Gallery Berlin kuratiert wird.
Mit einem Vortrag des kanadischen Schriftstellers Darren Wershler im Rahmen des FutureEverything Festivals in Manchester (http://www.transmediale.de/de/node/13010) gab die transmediale den Startschuss für eine neue kollaborative europaweite Initiative anlässlich des 100. Jahrestages der Geburt von Herbert Marshall McLuhan in 2011 (http://www.transmediale.de/en/beyond/McLuhan-2011).

Die transmediale.11 ist die 24. Ausgabe des Festivals für Kunst und digitale Kultur und wird vom 1. bis zum 6. Februar 2011 im Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin stattfinden.

2] Awards 2011
Das Einreichungsverfahren für den transmediale Award 2011 sowie den theoriebezogenen Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011 der transmediale ist ab sofort geöffnet. In den nächsten Monaten können Sie Kunstwerke, Projekte, Positionen und Texte einreichen. Der Einsendeschluss ist der 31. Juli 2010.

Der transmediale Award 2011 ist eine gemeinsame Ausschreibung der beiden Festivals transmediale und des CTM (club transmediale) in Berlin. Zum Wettbewerb laden wir Kunstwerke und Projekte ein, die auf die Herausforderung unserer sich schnell verändernden digitalen, technologischen und netzwerkbasierten Kultur reagieren.
Jurymitglieder des transmediale Award 2011 sind Marisa Olson (New York), Matteo Pasquinelli (Amsterdam), Brandon LaBelle (Berlin), Thomas Macho (Berlin), Defne Ayas (Shanghai)

Der Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011 wird bereits zum vierten Mal ausgeschrieben und fördert innovative medientheoretische und praxisbasierte Forschungsprojekte, die aktuelle Positionen digitaler Kunst und Kultur vorstellen. Gesucht werden Projekte, Positionen und Texte die jenseits festgefügter Methoden einen transdisziplinären Kontext zwischen kunstbasierter Forschung und medientheoretischem Diskurs schaffen. Der Theoriepreis wird seit 2008 gemeinsam mit dem _vilém_flusser_archiv der Universität der Künste in Berlin (UdK) vergeben.
Jurymitglieder des Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011 sind Marcel René Marburger (Köln), Nils Röller (Zürich), Carolyn Guertin (Austin), Alex Galloway (New York)

McLuhan in Europe 2011
transmediale, festival for art and digital culture Berlin, together with a network of selected European and Canadian partners, are preparing an event in the context of the 100th anniversary in 2011 of the birth of Herbert Marshall McLuhan. Although not a futurologist McLuhan, perhaps more accurately than any of his 20th Century counterparts, identified the mode and societal contours of the media oriented life we now experience in the 21st Century. The term 'Global Village' and phrases such as ‘the medium is the message’, which were coined and popularized by McLuhan, explored the notions of a complex and cacophonic world contracted in time and space by electronic technologies. The cultural network project McLuhan in Europe 2011 will explore, critique and celebrate the impact of this Canadian media and telecommunications visionary on European art and culture through a series of manifestations to occur in various locations, contexts and timeframes throughout across Europe in 2011. Several major events are already confirmed.
Fortsetzung des Free Culture Incubator
- Kreativwirtschaft und digitale Kultur -
Für die transmediale.10 hat die Kuratorin Ela Kagel den Free Culture Incubator entwickelt, ein Programm, das sich mit den Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten der Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft auseinandersetzt. In Projekten, Diskussionen und zahlreichen Workshops wurden erste Antworten auf die Fragen nach dem Kulturunternehmen der Zukunft entwickelt. Dabei interessierten uns vor allem die digitalen Formen der Kulturproduktion und die damit verbundenen Fragen nach Eigentum, Verbreitung und Bezahlung der Inhalte. Als Fortsetzung wird derzeit eine 12monatige Workshop-Reihe speziell für freischaffende Künstler und Kulturarbeiter gemeinsam mit verschiedenen Partnern in Berlin entwickelt. Im Fokus steht die Vermittlung von praktischem Wissen, Skills und Praktiken rund um das Offene Web und die freie digitale Kultur. Ab September soll es losgehen.

Das diesjährige Video Tournee- Programm ist eine Auswahl herausragender Werke, die das Thema der transmediale.10 – FUTURITY NOW! – reflektieren. Die acht Videos dieses Programms nutzen eine breite Palette künstlerischer Methoden – von der Narration bis zum Sampling – um diese Vorstellungen der Zukunft zu untersuchen.

Dear transmediale friends, welcome to the first in our new series of monthly newsletters in the run-up to transmediale.11! We'd like to thank all the artists and guests who participated and visited the festival in 2010, and look forward to welcoming you back again next year. The resonance from tm.10 was excellent, and projects extending out from and beyond the festival will be taking place at numerous locations locally and internationally including a series of 'Free Culture Incubator' workshops in Berlin, a 'Long Conversation' in July in Bandung Indonesia and an exhibition in Beijing in August curated by our partners and collaborators from the Art Claims Impulse Gallery Berlin.
With a Keynote event featuring Darren Wershler at FutureEverything in Manchester recently, transmediale launched a new collaborative initiative across Europe to celebrate next year's centennial of Marshall McLuhan's birth.

The transmediale Award and Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011 Call for Entries is now open! The Award competitions seek outstanding entries that exemplify visionary, adventurous and critical forms of digital expression, interaction, and collaborative practice. Entries from countries and regions in which digital art and culture are emergent are encouraged, as are positions that enrich our understanding of, and relationship to, technology and networked society.
Applications may be submitted until the deadline July 31, 2010
The transmediale Award 2011 seeks original, innovative and visionary works across a wide scope of form, process and practice that embrace, question and enrich our understanding of and relationship to our globally complex, media immersed and technologically diverse society. Entries that exemplify new and critical forms of digital expression, interaction, and collaborative practice are encouraged, as are works from countries and regions in which digital art and culture are emergent.

The Vilém Flusser Theory Award (VFTA) promotes innovative media theory and practice-oriented research exploring current and pending positions in digital art, media culture and networked society. The Award was initiated in 2008 as a collaboration with the _vilém_flusser_archive of the University of Arts, Berlin (UdK).

Continuation of the Free Culture Incubator
- Creative industries and digital culture -
After the Free Culture Incubator (http://www.transmediale.de/en/node/10997) program was launched at transmediale.10, it is still alive and kicking. Over the last weeks, Ela Kagel presented the project at various symposiums and gatherings, such as the KreativORTungen Conference in Munich (http://platform3.de/programm/28-05-2010/kreativortungen) or Our Shared Factory in Paris (http://www.lafabriqueducommun.1s.fr/). After our follow-up meeting with partners and participants in April we have decided to continue the Incubator workshops with a 12 month workshop series dedicated to a broad range of topics surrounding free culture and the open web. The workshops are currently being planned and designed together with different partners in Berlin.
